Sunset Magazine features our Scout Lake Residence

Designed by Stephenson Collective, featured in Sunset’s April-May 2023 Issue

Our Scout Lake Residence, designed by Stephenson Collective and built by us, is featured on the cover of Sunset Magazine as “the new Western home.” Story by Christine Lennon and photographs by Thomas J. Story.

The feature article highlights our client’s love of nature and Danish design, all of which unite in this modern home, originally dreamed up in a Minecraft model.

The house features horizontal board formed concrete, floor-to-ceiling walls of glass, and Shou Sugi Ban siding, a Japanese technique of charring wood to protect it from the elements.

On the lake-side of the house, the ground floor boasts entire walls of glass, which open up completely to the landscape, turning the first floor into a covered patio. The interior floor is polished concrete with radiant heating.

The floating concrete stairwell, housed inside walls of glass, is an engineering feat. The steel stringer, adjacent to the windows, holds 200-pound concrete treads. The staircase was a full team effort, working closely with the architect, our concrete department, Hjorth Consulting who fabricated the steel, and Nickerson Engineering to bring the design to life.

The interior materials feature a kitchen of white oak, dark stained and clear, made by the Dovetail Wood Shop. The vaulted ceiling and soffit is clear vertical grain cedar, installed by Dovetail’s master carpenters. The fireplace surround includes a double-height wall of blackened steel, fabricated by the Dovetail Metal Shop.

The base of the fireplace is made of board formed concrete, which is integrated into bench seating and firewood storage, and pairs with the blackened steel surround.

"We didn't remove a lot of trees,” says our client. “We wanted windows to surround our house so you feel like you're in nature." Pick up a current copy of Sunset or click here to see more of “the new western home."
